Breast Augmentation

Breast enlargement is the ideal procedure for women interested in increasing the size of their breasts.  Breast augmentation will give you a natural fuller look, and a greater freedom with fashion.

Self-image is the most common reason for breast augmentation whether it is to bring balance to your overall body shape, or to restore your natural breast size.

Breast implants can be placed above the muscle or behind the muscle.  Placement under the muscle is recommended for two reasons; the breasts over time remain “perkier” due to the internal bra effect provided by the sub-muscular placement.  Secondly, there is a decreased incident of capsular contraction, which is scar tissue around the breast implant.  The submuscular placement constantly massages the implant, which decreases the chance of this rare occurrence.

Incisions can be placed under the arm, under the fold of the breast, or around the nipple.  All incisions are less than one-inch and heal extremely well.  The size of your implant is a personal decision.

There is no standardization of “cup” size. We encourage you to bring in pictures of women who you feel would be the size you desire.  We also have a photo album of before and after pictures you may use to visualize your desired breast size.  Also breast sizers can be used so that you can see what you will look like in clothes.

Each year thousands of women have breast augmentation and experience no major complications.  Most breast implants are saline-filled (in the unlikely event that an implant would rupture or leak the saltwater is harmlessly absorbed by your body).  Silicone is also available for those that would like that implant.

Dr. Simmonds requires a baseline mammogram before surgery to assist in detecting any future changes in your breast tissue.  Dr. Simmonds will go over your health history and any medical conditions you may have as with any surgery, risks and benefits will be discussed.

Following Dr. Simmonds instructions, before and after surgery, will help minimize these risks.  Pre-operative instructions include that you quit smoking tobacco, avoid certain medications, and arrange to have help following your surgery for at least the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours.

Surgery takes about an hour and half and is preformed at an outpatient surgery center. You will go home the same day and are seen for a one-day post op check the next day at Dr. Simmonds office.

Plastic surgery is a personal and important decision. Dr. Simmonds wants to assure you that he and his staff are committed to providing personalized and quality care. We welcome the opportunity to give you the information you need to make the best possible decision.

Unfortunately some women's breasts may tend to sag over time. This may be secondary to gravity or due to childbirth. A breast lift or mastopexy is performed to raise and reshape sagging breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning remaining breast tissue and areolas/nipples. Some women may find it necessary to have the breast implants in order to gain the fullness in the upper chest that is desired. Scars on the breast may be as minimal as a scar just around the areola (nipple), although some may experience more extensive scarring due to need for extensive surgery of the breasts.

The initial recovery phase is from three to seven days. Full recovery takes approximately six weeks. Activities may need to be limited during this six week period. The actual breast shape will change over the first six to twelve months. This is a very normal process as your body adjusts to new more shapely breasts.

Dr. Simmonds requires a baseline mammogram before surgery to evaluate your breast tissue before Surgery. Dr. Simmonds will go over your health history and any medical conditions you may have. As with any surgery, risks and benefits will be discussed.

Following Dr. Simmonds' instructions, before and after surgery, minimize these risks. Some instructions include stop smoking, avoiding certain medications, and arranging to have help following your surgery. It is our goal to make you happy with your results and for you to feel a new sense of self confidence with your new body image.
